Generating functions for computing power indices e¢ciently
The Shapley-Shubik power index in a voting situation depends on the number of orderings in which each player is pivotal. The Banzhaf power index depends on the number of ways in which each voter can e¤ect a swing. We introduce a combinatorial method based in generating functions for computing these power indices e¢ciently and we study the time complexity of the algorithms. We also analyze the m...
متن کاملGenerating functions partitioning algorithm for computing power indices in weighted voting games
In this paper new approach to calculating power indices is described. The problem com plexity class is #P-complete. Constructed algorithm is a mix of ideas of two algorithms: Klinz & Woeginger partitioning algorithm and Mann & Shapley generating functions al gorithm. Time and space complexities of the algorithm are analysed and compared with other known algorithms for the problem. Constructed...
متن کاملImplementing generating functions to obtain power indices with coalition configuration
We consider the Banzhaf-Coleman and Owen power indices for weighted majority games modified by a coalition configuration. We present calculation algorithms of them that make use of the method of generating functions. We programmed the procedure in the open language R and it is illustrated by a real life example taken from social sciences.
متن کاملComputation of several power indices by generating functions
In this paper we propose methods to compute the Deegan-Packel, the Public Good, and the Shift power indices by generating functions for the particular case of weighted voting games. Furthermore, we define a new power index which combines the ideas of the Shift and the Deegan-Packel power indices and also propose a method to compute it with generating functions. We conclude by some comments abou...
متن کاملComputing Power Indices for Large Voting Games
Voting Power Indices enable the analysis of the distribution of power in a legislature or voting body in which different members have different numbers of votes. Although this approach to the measurement of power, based on co-operative game theory, has been known for a long time its empirical application has been to some extent limited, in part by the difficulty of computing the indices when th...
